Lacrosse

Lacrosse is a team sport that is played with either ten players (men field) six players (men box, indoor) or twelve players (women), each of whom uses a netted stick (the crosse) in order to pass and catch a very hard rubber ball with the aim of scoring goals (each worth one point traditionally, but Major League Lacrosse uses a two point goal for goals scored from a distance of 15 yards or greater from the goal) by propelling the ball into the opponent's goal. The team scoring the most points after two halves, of varying length from competition to competition, and overtime if necessary, wins. Most popular in North America, lacrosse is Canada's official national summer sport and the fastest growing sport in the United States. In its modern form, men's lacrosse is played on a field of grass, artificial turf, or field turf. Each team is composed of 10 players on the field at a time: three attackmen, three midfielders, three defenders and one goaltender. In men's lacrosse, players wear protective equipment on their heads, shoulders, arms, and hands, as body-checking is an integral part of the game, and stick checks to the arms and hands are considered legal. Women's lacrosse is played in a similar manner except with two additional midfielders per team. Players of women's lacrosse need only wear protective eyewear (except for the goaltender, who wears additional padding, usually consisting of a helmet, shin guards, and chest pad, and most goalies do not wear arm pads), as contact is not permitted apart from minor stick-checks. Gaels Capture Novice “A” Title To End Festival

Well it’s been 10 full days of lacrosse, starting with the Peewee Provincials back on August 1st. We had everything thrown in, including the Tykes, the Nationals and all of the Peewee, Bantam, Midget and Intermediate Girls teams.

Minor Star(s) of The Day August 10/08

I caught the Novice C2 Championship Final today between Kahanwake and Six Nations # 2.  I had a recommendation to have a look at one of Kahnawake’s young players as a potential winner for the Minor Star of the day.  So I figured the least I could do, was check out his game.

National Championship Games An Absolute Delight

Well the Festival has one more day until the close with the Novice Provincials being decided tomorrow, but the National portion of the 10 day event came to close on Saturdayevening.  It all started off in the morning with Quebec winning “B” Bronze in both Peewee and Bantam, defeating Manitoba in both cases.  The Peewees won 6-5 while the Bantams won 6-3.

This Week In Lacrosse Episode 26

From the Festival, lots to talk about:

Novice Provincial Schedule / Results

The Novices start up tomorrow and go through until Sunday.  Below is the schedule for the three days:

2008 Festival Minor Star of the Day Kelly Babstock

All right, plain and simple this girl can play lacrosse. I had spoken to a few folks around the arena prior to seeing Kelly play, and the comments coming form everyone were, she’s awesome, you cannot stop her, etc., etc. I mistakenly asked one of her team mates (before I met Kelly) if she was Kelly. The response? “Yeah, I wish”. The game I caught in the early afternoon, Mississauga defeated Clarington 6-2; Kelly scored six goals. So without further delay, our Minor Star of the day….Ms. Kelly Babstock.

BC - Ontario Bantam Matchup Highlights Day Three

It was supposed to be a battle of the Heavyweights.  Team British Columbia and Team Ontario, representing the powerhouse lacrosse centres in Canada (along with the ILA and Alberta of late).  And while the score would indicate that it was a close game, it really was not all that close until the third period.  The final score was 6-3 in favour of the boys from British Columbia.
